SEBS vs. SEPS: Key Differences in Structure, Properties, and Applications
November 04, 2026

In the world of Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPEs), Hydrogenated Styrenic Block Copolymers (HSBCs) stand out for their excellent weatherability, colorability, and physical performance. Among them, SEBS (Styrene-Ethylene-Butylene-Styrene) and SEPS (Styrene-Ethylene-Propylene-Styrene) are the two most widely specified polymers.

While both are hydrogenated A-B-A triblock copolymers with exceptional thermal and UV stability, subtle differences in their elastomer mid-blocks grant them unique physical characteristics.

Whether you are formulating soft gels, designing medical tubing, or upgrading polymer impact modifiers, understanding the distinctions between SEBS and SEPS is essential for optimal material selection.

1. Molecular Structure Differences

The primary chemical difference between SEBS and SEPS lies in the precursor monomer used to synthesize the soft elastomer mid-block prior to hydrogenation:

SEBS (Styrene-Ethylene-Butylene-Styrene):

  • Precursor: Synthesized by hydrogenating Polybutadiene (PB) with a controlled 1,2-addition vinyl content.
  • Mid-Block Structure: The resulting mid-block consists of alternating ethylene and butylene units (EB).
  • Crystallization Behavior: The EB segments possess minor micro-crystallinity depending on the 1,2-vinyl ratio, which subtlely influences mechanical recovery and low-temperature performance.

SEPS (Styrene-Ethylene-Propylene-Styrene):

  • Precursor: Synthesized by hydrogenating Polyisoprene (PI) with high 1,4-addition structure.
  • Mid-Block Structure: The resulting mid-block consists of ethylene and propylene units (EP).Crystallization
  • Behavior: The pendant methyl groups in the EP mid-block effectively disrupt chain crystallization. As a completely amorphous mid-block, SEPS demonstrates lower glass transition temperatures (Tg) and faster elastic recovery.

2. Key Performance Comparison

Performance Metric SEBS ( e.g., Sinopec YH-503T) SEPS (e.g., Sinopec YH-4053)
Mid-Block Architecture Ethylene-Butylene (EB) Ethylene-Propylene (EP)
Tensile Strength (MPa) 25 38
Elongation at Break (%) 480 % Superior elongation capacity
Compression Set & Recovery Good (Permanent deformation ~16%) Exceptional (Ultra-low deformation)
Oil Absorption & Retention High oil uptake Extremely high oil retention
Solution Viscosity (25°C) 2500 mPa.s (10% Toluene) 5900 mPa.s (10% Toluene)
Optical Clarity Excellent transparency Superior water-clear clarity

3. Application Spectrum: SEBS vs. SEPS

SEBS

  • General-Purpose TPE Compounds: Ideal for dual-injection tool handles, footwear soles, household grips, and toys due to balanced stiffness and cost efficiency.
  • Plastic Modification: Functions as a cost-effective impact modifier for PP, PE, PS, and engineering plastics (when grafted, e.g., SEBS-g-MAH for PA6/PC).
  • Wire & Cable Insulation: Combined with PP, white oil, and flame retardants to produce halogen-free flame retardancy (HFFR) jackets.

Asphalt & Roofing Modification: Improves binder flexibility and high-temperature rutting resistance.

SEPS

  • Super-Soft & Jelly Gels: Serves as the premier base resin for high-oil-content gels, shock-absorbing cushions, and medical teaching models due to zero oil bleeding.
  • Medical Devices: Used in medical tubing, stoppers, syringe gaskets, and IV components requiring maximum clarity, purity, and plasticizer-free safety.
  • Viscosity Index Improvers (VII): Used in synthetic lubricating oils and lubricants due to excellent shear stability and amorphous oil solubility (e.g., Sinopec SEPS YH-4030).
  • Cable & Fiber Filling Ointments: Acts as a gel filler in optical cables to ensure moisture resistance, electrical insulation, and signal stability (e.g.,Sinopec SEPS YH-4010).

Selection Summary:

Choose SEPS if: You are pursuing ultimate softness, high elasticity, superior optical clarity, and low strain hysteresis, and your budget allows.

Choose SEBS as the practical choice if: You require good tensile strength, wear resistance, and weatherability while prioritizing maximum cost efficiency.
