  • Special VAE Emulsions for Waterproof Building Coatings: DiverSol 777 and 779P
    Dec 04, 2025
In the field of building waterproofing, polymer cement waterproof coatings have always been a market favorite due to their environmental friendliness, high film strength, and good compatibility with damp substrates. As the core raw material of JS coatings, the performance of the polymer emulsion directly determines the success or failure of the final waterproof layer. Today, we will delve into DiverSol 779P (VAE CW40-705) and DiverSol 777 (VAE CW40-705). By interpreting the data of these two products, which conform to GB/T 23445-2009 Type II standard, we will analyze the key technical aspects of high-performance waterproof emulsions in practical applications.   1. Technical Characteristics and Performance Highlights of Two Special VAE Emulsion Both DiverSol 777 and 779P are plasticizer-free VAE Emulsion (Vinyl Acetate–ethylene Copolymer Emulsion) , presenting as a milky white water-based system. They maintain relatively consistent key indicators such as solid content, viscosity, pH, and glass transition temperature (Tg), which helps to maintain stable performance in different application scenarios.     ♠ Industry Significance in Performance: Low Tg for Flexibility: Suitable for Type II waterproof coatings requiring low-temperature flexibility and crack resistance; the film exhibits good elongation after drying, adapting to slight substrate displacement and temperature changes. Excellent Compatibility with Cement Systems: The PVA protective colloid improves the dispersibility of the emulsion when mixed with cement and fillers; significantly improves the sag resistance and thixotropic properties of cement paste. Plasticizer-Free Formulation: Reduces VOC emissions and enhances environmental friendliness; more stable in the formulation, preventing performance degradation due to migration. Adaptability to Wet Environments: Forms a film on damp, cold substrates without chalking or early cracking.   2. Application Logic and Formulation Synergy in Waterproof Building Coatings 2.1 Mechanism of Action in Waterproof Coating Systems ♣ VAE emulsions play three roles in cement-based waterproof coatings: Providing flexibility: filling the "brittleness gap" of the cement system; Improving water resistance: forming a continuous polymer film in the pores after cement hydration; Promoting workability: improving thixotropy, reducing sagging, and improving the smoothness of application.   The low Tg characteristics of DiverSol 777 and 779P enable the polymer phase to form a continuous film structure at room temperature or even low temperature, thereby effectively improving the coating density. It forms an interpenetrating network (IPN) structure with the cement hydrate, enhancing adhesion and crack resistance, which are fundamental properties that Type II waterproof coatings must meet.   2.2 Key Performance Improvement Points in Waterproofing Systems (1) Improved Flexibility and Crack Resistance The addition rate of the emulsion is usually 10–20% of the total mass of the system. The DiverSol series can achieve the following within this range: Increased tensile strength Increased elongation Buffering ability for mortar shrinkage cracks (2) Anti-sagging and workability 779P emphasizes "good anti-sagging performance" in its description. Its thixotropy is suitable for: Facade construction Multi-corner structures such as bathrooms Stability control of thick coating operations (3) Durability and water resistance The polyvinyl alcohol protective colloid system after film formation can make the emulsion evenly distributed in the cement pores: Reduce water absorption Improve freeze-thaw cycle stability Delay the alkaline erosion of cement paste (4) Strong substrate adaptability Both emulsions can be applied under "low temperature or high humidity conditions", especially suitable for: Rainy season construction areas Underground structures Brick and concrete building bases that are prone to dampness   3. Engineering value, storage and transportation and production operation points   3.1 Engineering value manifestation In building engineering applications, waterproofing systems usually face challenges such as diverse substrates, complex construction environments and high durability requirements. The selection of a suitable VAE emulsion not only affects product test indicators but also long-term operational stability. The value of DiverSol 777 and 779P to engineering projects is mainly reflected in: (1) Improved overall construction efficiency Good thixotropy, easier application, and reduced rework Strong adaptability to wet substrates, eliminating the need for prolonged drying of the substrate (2) Effectively extends the service life of the waterproofing system The continuous polymer phase reduces the path of moisture intrusion Strong crack resistance, especially suitable for areas with slight structural movement, such as bathroom corners and roof panel joints (3) Wide range of applications Waterproofing for bathrooms, kitchens, and balconies\Basement and foundation protection layers Roof coatings Flexible waterproofing primers for interior and exterior walls Premixed waterproofing slurry for engineering projects (4) Compliant with environmental trends Plasticizer-free, water-based, and low-residue, helping the product pass environmental building material certification or meet VOC requirements   3.2 Storage Specifications (1) Storage Environment and Shelf Life Temperature Control: The emulsion must be stored in a sheltered area and must not be frozen. Storage temperature should be strictly controlled between 5°C and 40°C. Once VAE emulsions freeze, they are usually irreversible after demulsification, resulting in direct economic losses. Shelf Life Management: Under suitable conditions and in their original, unopened packaging, DiverSol 779P and 777 have a minimum shelf life of 6 months. It is recommended that factories implement a "first-in, first-out" (FIFO) inventory management principle. (2) Pretreatment and Usage Precautions Filtration and Stirring: During transportation and storage, soft lumps or a skin may form on the surface of the emulsion, a common physical phenomenon in polymer dispersions. Therefore, filtration is strongly recommended before use. Especially if the product has been stored for a long time, thorough stirring is essential before use to ensure homogeneity. Preservative Treatment: Preservatives are added to the product at the factory to prevent microbial contamination. However, once the container is opened or transferred to another storage tank, the original preservative system may be insufficient to resist new microbial attacks. If the product cannot be used immediately, the user must take appropriate precautions (such as sealing for storage) or add a suitable preservative after transfer. (3) Safety Precautions Although the DiverSol series is considered safe for its intended use, as a chemical feedstock, it contains trace amounts of residual vinyl acetate monomer (controlled below 0.5%). Therefore, adequate ventilation should be maintained in the operating area. Operators should wear protective clothing, gloves, and goggles. In case of skin or eye splashes, rinse immediately with water.   Website: www.elephchem.com Whatsapp: (+)86 13851435272 E-mail: admin@elephchem.com

  • Why Is VAE Emulsion Popular in Paints and Coatings Applications?
    Sep 18, 2025
Adhesives are essential for almost every item we use in our daily lives, from furniture and flooring to packaging. Traditional adhesives, such as solvent-based glues and bone glue, have long dominated the market. However, with growing environmental awareness and technological advancements, a new adhesive, VAE Emulsion (Vinyl Acetate–ethylene Copolymer Emulsion), is gradually entering our market.     I. Introduction to VAE Emulsions Vinyl acetate and ethylene copolymer emulsions typically contain 0-30% vinyl groups. Ethylene acts as an internal plasticizer. A higher vinyl content results in a lower glass transition temperature, a softer resin, and greater flexibility. Ethylene also has low polarity and excellent water resistance. Previously, only polyvinyl acetate emulsions were available, but these had poor water resistance and flexibility, and also exhibited poor adhesion to non-polar or less polar materials such as polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride. VAE emulsions are used in wood glue, paper packaging adhesives, architectural coatings, mortar modification (e.g., waterproofing), and even plastic film lamination.   2. Advantages of VAE Emulsions in Architectural Coatings Low VOC Low-VOC latex paints using VAE emulsions (such as VAE Emulsion CW 40-600) provide a high-quality interior environment with excellent workability and good color development. In Europe, over 90% of zero-/low-VOC interior wall paints use VAE emulsions. VAE emulsions are the primary binder used in cigarette adhesives. Compared to acrylic emulsions, vinyl acetate emulsions contain fewer benzenes and aromatic hydrocarbons. Furthermore, they do not require the addition of coalescing agents. Acrylic emulsions, on the other hand, lack the ability to achieve both film-forming and scrub resistance, necessitating the addition of coalescing agents to ensure a high Tg. Vinyl acetate, on the other hand, is softened by water, eliminating the need for coalescing agents.   Weatherability The presence of vinyl monomers in VAE emulsions increases the polymer's hydrophobicity, resulting in excellent water resistance in the resulting coating. This is crucial for outdoor coatings, as it prevents rain from eroding the coating, leading to blistering, cracking, and flaking. Chalking Resistance: Chalking is the phenomenon of paint decomposing due to aging under the influence of ultraviolet light and oxygen, resulting in the formation of white powder on the surface. VAE emulsions have excellent chalking resistance, which helps the coating maintain its appearance and protective properties over time. Flexibility and Crack Resistance: VAE emulsion coatings exhibit excellent flexibility, adapting to the expansion and contraction of the substrate due to temperature fluctuations. This effectively prevents cracking caused by stress concentration in the coating, thereby extending the coating's service life. Adhesion: VAE emulsions (such as VAE Emulsion CW 40-602) exhibit excellent adhesion to a variety of substrates, including common building materials such as cement and bricks. Even in adverse weather conditions, the coating remains firmly attached to the wall and resists peeling.   Cost Advantages First, there is no need to purchase expensive solvents, reducing raw material costs. Second, its high solids content means that less material is required for the same bonding effect. More importantly, it reduces environmental remediation costs associated with hazardous emissions and potential safety risks. For businesses, choosing VAE emulsions is not only a positive response to environmental regulations but also a long-term, sustainable economic investment.   Strong Adhesion Used in Mortar Mixing: VAE emulsion, when added to mortar, increases strength, improves adhesion to various substrates, enhances wear and impact resistance, improves water absorption and permeability, and improves chemical resistance. This polymer mortar is currently widely used due to its excellent properties. Characteristics of Mortar Mixed with VAE Emulsion: When VAE is added to mortar, many properties are improved, as shown in Figure 1. However, the performance of the mortar varies depending on the amount of emulsion added. According to Sumitomo Corporation's research, a P/C (polymer weight/cement weight) ratio of 0.1-0.4 is the optimal ratio for both performance and economics. Increasing Mortar Strength: The fluidity (flow value) of mortar increases with the amount of emulsion added. This fact demonstrates that by adding emulsion, the amount of water can be reduced, resulting in a denser hardened material, increased strength, and reduced shrinkage and water absorption. Improving Mortar Brittleness: When VAE emulsion is mixed into the mortar, vibration-absorbing polymer particles fill the voids in the cement, improving the mortar's impact resistance.   3. Future Development Trends of VAE Emulsions Non-PVA Emulsifier Systems Using a surfactant system and soap-free polymerization technology eliminates the drawbacks of poor water resistance and large particle size caused by PVA's water resistance. Copolymer Systems Using versatate vinyl carbonate, it leverages its high weathering, water, and alkali resistance.   With the growing global focus on sustainable development and green manufacturing, the environmental and health issues associated with traditional adhesives are facing increasing challenges. As a high-performance, environmentally friendly, and versatile adhesive, VAE emulsions are experiencing rapidly growing market demand. Their applications are not only expanding in traditional wood processing, paper products, and textiles, but are also showing great potential in emerging areas such as automotive interiors, building materials, and battery bonding.   Website: www.elephchem.com Whatsapp: (+)86 13851435272 E-mail: admin@elephchem.com

  • VAE Emulsion Production Process
    Oct 20, 2022
VAE emulsion is the abbreviation of vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer emulsion. It is a polymer emulsion formed by emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate and ethylene monomer as basic raw materials with other auxiliary materials.‌The production process of VAE emulsion mainly includes the following steps‌: The main raw materials of VAE emulsion include ethylene, vinyl acetate, emulsifier and initiator. Ethylene can be made from naphtha or natural gas; vinyl acetate is made from the reaction of ethylene and acetic acid.   After mixing ethylene and vinyl acetate in a certain proportion, they are passed into the reactor, initiators and emulsifiers are added, and emulsion polymerization is carried out under appropriate temperature and pressure. Control the reaction speed and temperature to completely convert the monomer and generate VAE emulsion‌.   The generated VAE emulsion needs to be degassed to remove unreacted monomers and low molecular volatiles. Adjust the pH value of the emulsion to make it more stable, and perform filtration to remove impurities and solid particles in the emulsion.   Put the processed VAE emulsion into a special container, seal it and store it away from direct sunlight and high temperature environment.   The production and use of VAE emulsion (DA-310 & VINNAPAS 6300) must comply with national and local environmental protection standards, including emission standards for waste water, exhaust gas, noise, etc. Waste water, waste gas and other waste generated during the production process need to be effectively treated and discharged to ensure compliance with environmental protection requirements.   Website: www.elephchem.com Whatsapp: (+)86 13851435272 E-mail: admin@elephchem.com ElephChem Holding Limited, professional market expert in Polyvinyl Alcohol(PVA) and Vinyl Acetate–ethylene Copolymer Emulsion(VAE) with strong recognition and excellent plant facilities of international standards.

  • Blending Modified VAE Emulsion
    Aug 06, 2021
Vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer emulsion is a polymer emulsion made of vinyl acetate and ethylene as basic raw materials, referred to as VAE emulsion or EVA emulsion in English. Since its introduction in 1965, it has been widely used in adhesives, building materials, coatings, papermaking, fabric processing, tobacco, packaging and other fields due to its excellent adhesion, permanent flexibility, good acid and alkali resistance and other properties.   In order to improve the performance of VAE emulsion and expand its application range, a lot of fruitful modification research has been done to improve the water resistance, mechanical strength, heat resistance, adhesion, curing speed and other aspects of VAE emulsion. These modification studies are mainly focused on the following directions: additive method, copolymerization method, composite modification method and blending method. Among them, the blending method is a method of physically blending VAE emulsion with one or more polymer solutions or emulsions to form a multi-component system. The properties of the various components of the blending method can complement each other, thereby obtaining new materials with better performance or new properties, reducing costs while potentially expanding the application field of VAE emulsion, allowing VAE emulsion to play a greater application value.   Polymer solutions or polymer emulsions that are often blended with VAE emulsions include: rosin resin, phenolic resin, urea-formaldehyde resin, terpene resin, polyurethane emulsion, acrylic emulsion, styrene-acrylic emulsion, vinyl acetate emulsion, styrene-butadiene emulsion, etc. Since VAE emulsion has good miscibility with a variety of emulsions, blending is the simplest and most direct way to achieve complementary properties of the blended components and obtain new properties.   PVAc emulsion was used to modify VAE emulsion, and at the same time, thickening resin and additives were used to synthesize an adhesive suitable for bonding non-polar plastic materials. The addition of thickening resin significantly improved the bonding strength of the emulsion; the addition of acidic metal salt crosslinking agent improved the water resistance of the system without affecting the stability of the emulsion.   VAE emulsion(such as DA-180L) was modified by blending pure acrylic emulsion, acetic acid acrylic emulsion, silicone acrylic emulsion, styrene acrylic emulsion and VAE emulsion to prepare adhesive. The results show that the VAE emulsion modified by acrylate emulsion has been greatly improved in bonding performance and peel strength. Among them, the adhesive obtained by using acetic acid acrylic emulsion to modify VAE emulsion has the best comprehensive performance, especially the most obvious improvement in high temperature adhesion.   Website: www.elephchem.com Whatsapp: (+)86 13851435272 E-mail: admin@elephchem.com ElephChem Holding Limited, professional market expert in Polyvinyl Alcohol(PVA) and Vinyl Acetate–ethylene Copolymer Emulsion(VAE) with strong recognition and excellent plant facilities of international standards.

  • Factors affecting the viscosity of VAE emulsion
    Jun 03, 2021
VAE (ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer) emulsion viscosity is an important quality indicator and has a significant impact on product mass transfer, heat transfer, fluid flow, emulsion stability and emulsion transportation. Monomer ratio, polymerization temperature, initiator, emulsifier system optimization, electrolyte additives, and storage conditions are all factors that affect the viscosity of VAE emulsion( VAE DA 128).   1. Monomer ratio The selection and proportion of monomers directly affect the viscosity and other properties of VAE emulsion. The ratio of ethylene to vinyl acetate (VAc) is particularly critical. Generally speaking, VAE emulsions with a VAc content of 70% to 95% have higher viscosity. Increased VAc content will increase the flexibility and elasticity of the emulsion, and will also increase the viscosity of the emulsion.   2.Polymerization temperature control Polymerization temperature is another important factor affecting the viscosity of VAE emulsion. Changes in temperature will affect the rate of free radical generation and the rate of polymerization. Generally speaking, within a suitable temperature range, an increase in temperature will speed up the polymerization reaction, causing the latex particles in the emulsion to grow rapidly, resulting in an increase in viscosity. However, too high a temperature may cause the emulsion to gel, affecting its quality and stability.   3.Initiator The amount and type of initiator have a significant impact on the viscosity of VAE emulsions. Initiators mainly affect the rate of polymerization. When the amount of initiator is large, the polymerization reaction is fast, the number of generated latex particles increases, and the viscosity of the emulsion increases. However, excessive initiator may cause the reaction to be too fast and difficult to control, resulting in reduced emulsion performance. Different types of initiators generate different types of free radicals during the reaction and have different effects on the viscosity of the emulsion.   4. Emulsifier system optimization The selection and dosage of emulsifier are crucial to the stability and viscosity of VAE emulsion. The main function of emulsifier is to reduce the surface tension of emulsion and promote monomer dispersion and emulsion formation. Appropriate emulsifier concentration and anionic/nonionic emulsifier ratio can improve the stability of the emulsion and also affect the viscosity of the emulsion. The degree of polymerization and alcoholysis of protective colloids such as PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) also significantly affect the viscosity of the emulsion. The higher the degree of polymerization of PVA, the greater the viscosity of the emulsion; the higher the degree of alcoholysis, the lower the viscosity of the emulsion.   5.Electrolyte additives The addition of electrolyte additives can affect the viscosity and stability of VAE emulsions. Some electrolyte additives can compress the electric double layer of latex particles and reduce the electrostatic repulsion between latex particles, thereby increasing the viscosity of the emulsion. However, excessive amounts of electrolyte additives may cause aggregation in the emulsion, affecting its performance.   The factors that affect the viscosity of VAE emulsions include reaction time and rate, PH value, storage conditions and stability. In actual production and application, these factors need to be reasonably adjusted according to specific needs and conditions to obtain VAE emulsion products with excellent performance.   Website: www.elephchem.com Whatsapp: (+)86 13851435272 E-mail: admin@elephchem.com ElephChem Holding Limited, professional market expert in Polyvinyl Alcohol(PVA) and Vinyl Acetate–ethylene Copolymer Emulsion(VAE) with strong recognition and excellent plant facilities of international standards.
