Overview
Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA for short), organic compound, white flake, flocculent or powdered solid, non-toxic, tasteless, pollution-free, can be dissolved in 80--90 °C water. Slightly soluble in dimethyl sulfoxide. Its aqueous solution has good adhesion and film-forming properties; It has chemical properties such as esterification, etherification and acetalation of long-chain polyols. It is a water-soluble polymer with a wide range of uses, its performance is between plastic and rubber, and its uses can be divided into fiber and non-fiber two major uses.

Storage:
Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a water-soluble synthetic polymer that has a wide range of applications in industry, including as an ingredient in adhesives, coatings, and film forming agents. Proper storage of PVA is essential to maintain its quality and availability. Here are some general guidelines for PVA storage:
1.Temperature and humidity:
Store PVA in a cool, dry place. Exposure to high temperatures and humidity can lead to changes in the physical properties of the material, such as increased hygroscopicity.
Avoid storing in places with high temperature fluctuations.
2.Sealed container:
Store PVA in an airtight container to prevent moisture absorption. PVA is water-soluble and exposure to water affects its properties.
Use airtight containers or bags to protect materials from environmental conditions.
3.Protection from light:
Store PVA away from direct sunlight and other sources of UV rays. Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light can lead to polymer degradation.
4.Avoid pollution:
Keep away from contaminants that may affect the performance of polymer products, such as dust, dirt, and chemicals.
Use clean utensils and tools when handling and transferring PVA to prevent contamination.
5.Treatment measures:
During the storage and use of PVA, please follow the correct procedures to avoid the introduction of impurities.
Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, such as gloves and safety glasses, during contact.
6.First in first Out (FIFO):
Follow a FIFO system to ensure that older batches of PVA are used first. This helps to avoid the material being stored for a long time, reducing the risk of degradation.
7.Check for changes:
Check PVA in storage regularly for signs of discoloration, caking, or texture changes. If any anomalies are observed, the cause must be investigated and the suitability of the material assessed.
For the specific grade or type of PVA used, be sure to refer to the specific manufacturer's guidelines and recommendations.
Different formulations may have different storage requirements.
Proper storage methods contribute to the longevity and effectiveness of PVA in various applications.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: What Is The Difference Between PVA And PVOH?
A: There is no chemical difference. PVA and PVOH are two common abbreviations for the exact same polymer, Polyvinyl Alcohol. PVOH is often used in technical, chemical, and industrial contexts to prevent confusion with PVA Glue (Polyvinyl Acetate) or PVA Water (Polyvinyl Amide).
Q: What Is Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA)?
A: Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA/PVOH) is a water-soluble, synthetic polymer known for its excellent film-forming, emulsifying, and adhesive properties. It is widely used in packaging films, textile sizing, paper coatings, adhesives, and water-soluble laundry bags due to its high tensile strength, flexibility, and non-toxic nature.
Q: What is the price of PVOH?
A: The market price of PVOH varies depending on factors such as grade, degree of hydrolysis, viscosity, order volume, and current raw material costs (like VAM). Standard commercial grades typically fluctuate within the international commodity market range. Please contact our sales team with your target specifications (e.g., 088-20, 1788, 2488) for a real-time, customized quote.
Q: Is PVOH biodegradable?
A: Yes, PVOH is one of the few water-soluble polymers that is fully biodegradable. When exposed to water and active microorganisms (such as in municipal wastewater treatment plants or soil), it breaks down into water and carbon dioxide without leaving harmful plastic residue or microplastics behind.
Q: How should PVOH be dissolved?
A: To properly dissolve PVOH without forming lumps:
Add to Cold Water First: Slowly add the PVOH powder/granules into cold or room-temperature water while stirring continuously to disperse the particles uniformly.
Heat Gradually: Once fully dispersed, gradually raise the temperature to 85°C – 95°C (depending on the specific grade and degree of hydrolysis).
Hold & Stir: Maintain the elevated temperature and continue gentle stirring for 30 to 60 minutes until the solution becomes completely transparent and clear. Do not boil vigorously to avoid excessive foaming.
